13' x 7' Mural titled 'CULTURE LOUNGE'

Del Paso Blvd Sacramento

Project Overview

Angel Center for the Arts wanted to bring more vibrancy and character to the Culture Lounge located at the front of its venue on Del Paso Boulevard in Sacramento. Painted on a 13-by-7-foot interior wall behind the bar, the mural celebrates four influential musical icons—Vicente Fernández, Carlos Santana, Marvin Gaye, and Patsy Cline. Each artist represents a different musical style and cultural influence, creating a visual connection between music, performance, and the many forms of art celebrated within the center.

Creative Process

fter speaking with the client, it was clear that he wanted the mural to have a strong central focus. I developed a composition that placed the Angel Center for the Arts logo in the center, with the four musical icons arranged around it.

The color palette was inspired by references the client provided, including the bold oranges, reds, purples, and yellows found in Santana’s album artwork. The original concept featured Celia Cruz, but during the design process, the client decided that Carlos Santana would better represent the culture and atmosphere of the space.

I created the mural using a combination of spray paint and hand-painted acrylic details. Since the bar was portable, it could be moved away from the wall, allowing me to work without any major obstacles. The mural took approximately three weeks to complete due to an equipment malfunction and the additional time needed to order a few specialty paint colors.

The completed mural brought color, character, and a stronger sense of identity to the Culture Lounge. Against the existing white and brick walls, the vibrant portraits and bold color palette created a focal point behind the bar while clearly identifying the area as the Culture Lounge.

The client was very impressed with the final result and even began repainting another wall in the same purple featured in the mural to create a more cohesive atmosphere. Once renovations are complete, the mural is intended to serve as both a welcoming backdrop for guests and a photo-worthy feature within the venue. The Angel Center for the Arts is also planning a video interview to highlight the mural and the transformation of the space.

The Outcome

This mural contributes to the growing creative energy along Del Paso Boulevard, where local businesses, entertainment venues, artists, and community members are working together to revitalize the area. It is meaningful to be part of that development and to bring more public artwork to a neighborhood that is often overlooked in comparison to Downtown Sacramento.

By celebrating musicians from different cultural backgrounds and genres, the mural helps guests feel represented and more connected to the space. It also recognizes Del Paso Boulevard as an integral part of Sacramento’s artistic and cultural identity. The project has already brought me additional opportunities within the surrounding area, allowing me to continue contributing to the community’s growth through art.
